About Noble County Habitat for Humanity

Continuing to grow and to serve Habitat for Humanity of Noble County was launched in the early 1990's by current director Dan Frick and area ministers. Hearing of the good work being done by the Habitat for Humanity organization, they pulled together to start a local affiliate.

Armed at first with little more than hearts of gold and inspired energy, they were soon gifted a plot of land in Ligonier. Blessed further with the selfless support of volunteers throughout the county, the group transformed the plot of land -- formerly the site of a greenhouse -- into five new homes.

Putting the finishing touches on our 10th house Since then, Habitat for Humanity of Noble County has continued to grow and to serve, now planning to build its 10th home in the county.

With the continued support of donors and volunteers throughout the county, this dream of decent, affordable housing for our neighbors in need is becoming a reality.

Our Process

Applications are accepted from those wishing to partner with Habitat. Partnering means that the family agrees to the guidelines and is accepted for a Habitat home. All applications are reviewed and backgrounds are checked for references/work history, etc.

The Family Selection Committee reviews the applications and makes a recommendation for the Board of Directors. The Board will then review the recommended family addressing any questions the family may still have.

The Partner Family agrees to put “sweat equity” into their home as well as other Habitat homes. This equity is their down payment on the home. The partner family assumes a no-interest mortgage with low monthly payments. When their mortgage is paid they may sell their home and gain “equity” in the home. If they choose to sell the home, Habitat has first option to purchase the home at fair market value. The family may stay in their home as long as they wish. It is their home.

The process has proven to be a win-win situation. Families become stable. Children do better in school with a secure home life. Homeowners take pride in their homes and add to the property values in the neighborhoods. They contribute to the tax base making their community a better place to live.

All this is done because of people reaching out to their neighbors. People from all economic backgrounds come together with their time, talents and gifts to those in need. These, as you can see, are not “handouts”, as the families take responsibility and have control of their destiny. They see a hopeful future.
